& Design - Summer Term
We have chosen three stories to use for our Talking Textiles
unit of work. They are David & Goliath, George & the Dragon and the
Giant Turnip. All three stories we have worked on through in other
subjects: R.E. and French.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Mr. Brady & Mrs Illume certainly entered into the 'spirit' of things.

Year 5S had their very own Russian princess for the day - Anastacia.

Range:
Novels, stories and poems from other cultures/traditions, choral and
performance poetry. Persuasive writing: letters, commentaries, leaflets,
criticise and protest. Dictionaries & thesauruses including ICT sources.
Word Level:
Prefixes and suffixes. Identify everyday words from other languages.
Sentence Level:
Complex sentences, adaptation of writing for purpose and audience,
identify and classify prepositions. Use punctuation accurately in
complex sentences.
Text Level:
Read and evaluate letters. Investigate persuasive devices.
Note-making and constructing an argument. |
Number: Order positives and negative numbers, order fractions,
know simple fractions as percentages, and recall multiplication and
division facts up to 10 x 10, partition to multiply by 2, 5 or 10.
Round to nearest 10, 100 or 1000, calculate a temperature rise across
0 degrees Celsius.
Use relationship between multiply and divide, express a quotient as a
fraction or as a decimal when dividing a whole number, extend written
methods to TU x TU.
Relate fractions to decimal forms (including tenths and hundredths),
including percentages.
Shape & Space:
Recognise reflective symmetry in regular polygons, complete
symmetrical patterns, recognise where shapes will be after translation. |
Plants:
Identify conditions for growth. Investigate effect of minerals on
plant growth. Look at photosynthesis and the role of the roots, stem and
leaves in this process.
Habitats:
Identify life processes in familiar animals and plants and the
environments in which they are found. Compare two contrasting habitats
using scientific vocabulary. Possible field study to link with
geography.
Forces:
Look at floating/sinking and parachutes. Represent forces using force
diagrams. Identify movement in terms of forces acting; their size and
direction. |

· Consolidate Y1-Y4 high frequency
words and spell Year 5 medium frequency words
· To secure the basic conventions
of Standard English through agreement of nouns and verbs and consistency
of tense and subject
· To look for meaning beyond
the literal and use inference and deduction when reading |
Targets:
· Carry out long multiplication of
a two-digit by two-digit whole number
· Use all four operations to solve
simple word problems involving numbers and quantities, including time,
explaining methods and reasoning
· Use decimal
notation for tenths and hundredths |

History – Greece and the Olympics The children will be
investigating the influence of the Olympics on the Greek culture in
ancient and modern times. This will hopefully include a visit to
Liverpool Museum.
Geography – Coasts
The children will investigate the basic features of different coasts.
The focus is beaches around the Wirral and will hopefully include a
visit to Wirral Coastal Park.
RE – Parables and Precious
The stories Jesus told to teach us particular truths. Who and what
things are precious to them and to whom are they precious. |
ICT – Control/E-mails Children
will learn how to use control devices and be able to program sequences.
Using e-mail to send and receive messages. Attaching text/images.
Design & Technology – Bread
Adapting basic bread recipes to develop a product based on specified
criteria
Art – Talking Textiles
Children explore how stories are represented in textiles in different
times & cultures. They will be producing a piece of textiles based on a
familiar story. |
Music – Chords and Musical textures. Developing the skills of
performing and appraising western music through listening to and
applying knowledge of music and instruments, to explore pitch and
texture.
PE – Gymnastics: Flight
Use a variety of floor apparatus to perform actions, shapes and
balances clearly, consistently and fluently, with good body tension and
extension.
Athletics: Throwing, Running & Jumping.
Perform a range of throws with control & accuracy and sustain pace
when running longer distances. |
